North Shore Origins
Some people try to claim that the roast beef sandwich originated in places other than Boston or the North Shore, but we can’t believe that’s true. There are even people who claim that the roast beef sandwich started in Chicago! But if you’ve ever seen what passes for a roast beef sandwich in the West, you’ll wonder how anyone could even think that. Some beef on a bun does not make a roast beef sandwich.
The roast beef sandwich as we know it, thin slices of rare beef on a roll, has more than one origin story, but the best-known version involves a canceled wedding in 1951. As the story goes, Kelly’s in Revere, MA, had a whole roast beef left over after a couple canceled their wedding. Not wanting to waste that much quality beef, they sliced it up and served it at their hot dog stand. It was a hit, and it still remains Kelly’s most popular item to this day.
The best way to enjoy Lowell roast beef is ...
While all you really need to make a roast beef sandwich is beef and bread (and maybe a little salt), most people agree it’s best with a few toppings. The most popular toppings are barbeque sauce, cheese (usually American, placed on the bottom so it doesn’t slide off), and mayo. Pickles, horseradish, lettuce, and tomato are also popular additions to the classic sandwich.
